I began babysitting at age ten, but my passion for entertaining younger children began years before. By age thirteen, I had taught Bible school, Sunday school and Catechism and had babysat more than one hundred children. As I got older, I added a few hundred more children babysat, tutoring, coaching baton and volleyball, and life guarding to my repertoire. One of the greatest compliments came from a single father of two amazing boys. He said, “You are the best mother my boys have.”
Just as my passion for children began early, so did my passion for music. It began long before my first word. I learned to harmonize by listening to bands in uniforms and the folk choir in my church. I joined the choir the day I was old enough, which was thirteen, and continued until two years after high school. I began playing piano by ear, until my parents finally let me take lessons for a year and a half. I continued piano and voice lessons at Ferrum College where I was in the choir and the Hand Bell choir. The first summer after college, I worked for a Christian camp where I taught myself to play the guitar. I moved to Chattanooga and majored in Music at the University of Tennessee with a minor in Psychology. I continued singing in the choir and joined the show choir. In these choirs, I had the experience of touring in Florida and England.
After graduating, I worked as a waitress until the need to be around children again consumed me. I began working as a lead teacher of an infant room at Mulberry Childcare Center. I loved getting down on the floor and playing with the babies. I worked there for almost two years and then moved on to Penn Children’s Center. I had been at PCC for about two weeks when I met a couple who helped lead me to my heart’s desire. I had always wanted to be able to support myself with music and children, Peter and Ellen Allard saw that in me at a conference. They sent me to meet Peter Mosess who gave me the opportunity to teach music in pre schools. I took a job as a live in nanny with Wednesdays off to teach. I eventually added Fridays and started a mommy and me class on my own. I am now teaching in eight daycares and was running an after school program at the University City Arts League. My mommy and me classes were still going strong and had seen multiple children sit up, crawl, walk, run and go off to school singing the songs they’ve learned from me. Those classes were so successful that I decided to open my own shop in Jenkintown.
My goal for this business is to build a strong network of people dedicated to bringing music and art to the young child as well as allowing me to teach with my own style. There are many people, who, like me, don’t quite fit into little boxes and societal routines. I would like to give those people an opportunity to assemble their talents and do that thing that makes them happy. If you love what you do for a living, then you never have to work again.
